Industry Tourism

Keihin-rikai. Canal, Fishermen ships, fishermen houses

"As the smoke finally clears, Keihin-rinkai area officials realize they're sitting on a living museum", I read in the Asahi this weekend. The article is not available in the Asahi Online, but you can read it here:

I like to bicycle in Keihin-rinkai, the industrial zone between Yokohama and Kawasaki: Old shops, fishermen, poverty, industries, narrow streets, crumbly houses, rough people, fish markets.... Far away from modern, glittering Japan. In a sense, it's Japan from the dark side. But it is a particular area. I'm glad to read that Kanagawa Prefecture will try to preserve the area and promote industry tourism. After all: "This country became what it is because of manufacturing, people working with the hands. It's an aspect fewer young people get to see. We want them to see and think". A few photos here (I will have to add a lot more in the near future).
